Susan Smith-Massie, LMT, CNMT, CEMT Professional Biography

Susan Smith-Massie is a member of the faculty at The Florida College of Natural Health. Trigger Point Theory and Rehabilitation Techniques, Cranial Sacral Therapy, Hydrotherapy, Movement and Structure, Massage Variations, and Core are among her favorite modalities to teach in the professional program, and Functional Assessment is her passion in The Master Body Worker Program.

Practicing massage therapy techniques for 20 years, Susan attended Reese Institute of Massage Therapy in 1992-93 and graduated in 1993.

Hired by her Neuro-muscular Massage Therapy instructor, Susan began working in a fast-paced clinic soon after being licensed and worked there until 1994. Princeton Neuromuscular Massage Therapy Clinic was closer to home, and Susan enjoyed working at this office from 1994-1996 where she treated patients referred by various physicians. One of these referring physicians offered Susan a job as his on-site massage therapist to work within the scope of his practice. This opportunity opened doors to a world of high patient volume, intense injury massage, post- and pre-op massage, and precise insurance documentation for billing, as well as allowing her to observe various surgeries. Susan enjoyed working in this practice through 1999 and continued to treat the surgeon’s patients on a referral basis through 2004.

Today Susan enjoys a thriving out-call massage therapy practice.

When Susan is not teaching at the campus, or massaging her personal clientele, you will probably find her at one of the local horse farms engaging in her other passion: Equine Massage Therapy. She assesses and massages the horses, their riders, trainers, acupuncturists, chiropractors and Veterinarians.

Because Susan was brought up on a horse farm, she had the good fortune to spend most of her childhood on and around horses. She spent some weekends working in the barn, and others at horse shows competing for blue ribbons. Hers was the ideal background, providing the opportunity to firsthand knowledge about breeding and training these powerful but sensitive creatures, and maintaining them at their optimum levels of health and performance.

After graduating from Reese Institute, Susan traveled to Concord Massachusetts to the Jack Meagher Institute, where she trained with some of the top professionals in the equine massage field. It was here that an idea was born: Susan would combine her years of experience in working with horses with her passion for Massage Therapy to develop and teach an Equine Massage Certification Program. She has been providing—and teaching—massage for both humans and equines ever since.

Testimonials

"I've attended some great CEU courses in the last 15 years as a Massage Therapist, but the 125 hour Equine Certification Program beats them all."
Scott C. Orlando, Florida

"Thanks for a very professional certification course. It was so therapeutic to hang out with the horses and nature. I've already got a couple of horses to massage."
Andrea M. North Caroline

"I attended Susan Smith-Massie and Scott Coleman's Equine Massage workshop and it was money very well invested. I learned invaluable tools and training on how to treat horses. We were taught what to notice from the horses during treatment. We were trained on the different stress points to address on a horse. The workshop offered a great balance between demo/training and hands-on. We learned about several pathologies which was absolutely fascinating. The instructors and trainers were extremely knowledgeable and available to answer any question that we threw out at them. Suffice it to say, there were many happy horses at the end of the workshop. It was a splendid day rich with learning and fun!"
Priscilla Malin MA#67786. Orlando, Florida

"I can honestly say that Susan's equine class is the best investment I have made towards my career as a Massage Therapist. She provided a course rich with information that will benefit me throughout the rest of my career. The course was not only informative but it was also fun. I walked away with a sense of accomplishment and confidence in what i learned. Its remarkable to walk away from an eight hour course and feel confident enough with all the techniques i was taught that day to perform them in the field on my own. I encourage anyone that is considering taking this course to step into it open minded ready and willing to learn. I will be returning for the certification course. I'm looking forward to opening a promising chapter in my career. Thank you Susan and Scott for impacting not only my career but my life with your incredible teachings."
