Did You Know?...

  • Vastus Lateralis is the biggest and heaviest of the Quadricep Muscles.

  • Viewing it from the lateral side, its size and power become apparent.

  • Referred pain from active Trigger Points from Vastus Lateralis and Rectus Femoris, mimick Trochanteric Bursitis.

Muscle Attachments of the Quad muscles

  • Below, all four Quad muscles form a strong, common tendon

    attaching to the patella and

    patella retinaculum

    Vastus Lateralis wraps around the lateral femur, anchoring on the linea aspera on the posterior femur and

    above, to the greater trochanter

  • Rectus Femoris covers the Vastus Intermedius muscle attaching above to the anterior, inferior iliac crest and

    a second tendon attaching to the rim of the acetabulum

  • Vastus Medialis wraps around the medial femur, attaching to the linea aspera on the posterior femur and

    blending in the tendons of Adductor Magnus and Adductor Longus muscles.

  • Vastus Intermedius cannot be seen as it lies deep to Rectus Femoris and Vastus Lateralis. Attaches to the upper anterior and lateral shaft of the femur. Below, to the patella and patella ligament to the tibia tuberosity


Actions of the Knee muscles

  • extension of the knee joint

  • Rectus Femoris flexes the hip and pelvis


Nerve Innervation

  • Femoral nerve - L2, L3 and L4


Trigger Point Referred Pain Charts

  • lateral, medial, posterior sides of the knee, and into the patella

  • pain up and down the lateral, anterior, medial and posterior thigh regions
